"If music be the food of love, play on."

If you are looking for great professional sound, maximum versatility and more modest pricing, you'll no doubt understand the growing popularity of DJs. MBE's best advice is if you know your date and location, look and book! The internet is a great place to start, but could be a little overwhelming with all the information out there. There are internet services that offer DJs by location, type of entertainment, price packages that could help narrow the search. It helps that you know exactly what it is you're looking for prior to contacting any service, because this will help weed out the abundance of companies that don't fit the bill. Price should never be the top priority in any search. Remember, that price is always negotiable, but the quality and service shouldn't be. MBE recommends not to ignore the time tested word of mouth approach and the recommendations from friends and families. Here are some tips and guidelines regarding the hiring of a DJ or multi-system operators (large DJ companies with more than two systems):

Booking

Beware that no DJ or DJ companies are created equal and the best ones often book a year to two years in advance. If you are at an event and are impressed with the DJ, don't forget to ask for a business card before leaving the party or ask the host/hostess for the DJ/Company's information. It's also a good idea to get the DJ/MC’s name that you like and specifically request him/her for your future event, especially when contacting multi-system operators. These companies have many DJ/MCs on their payroll and they will assign any available DJ/MC to your event, if no specific request is made up-front and in advance. Some services offer discounts for booking early to fill dates. Even if not advertised, it doesn't hurt to inquire.
MBE is not a multi-system operator. MBE is a professionally family operated two-system company.

Pricing

DJs and DJ companies are the same as in any other business industry in terms of pricing. "You get what you pay for" certainly holds true in this area. Your first order of business is to determine exactly what your needs are in terms of music and what you would like the DJ to do and play. Beware of companies that promise every feature for below industry rates, usually $200 to $300 below the nearest competitors. They offer you these rates for many reasons including: they can't actually deliver as promised; are professionally unprepared; use sub-par equipment (non-professional/commercial audio equipment); send inexperienced DJ/MCs to your event; have inadequate and/or poor music inventory; are inappropriately attired; have no professional liability/insurance; often arrive and set-up late, or even worse, don't even show up. Beware of companies that don't offer you a professional contract, which clearly describes all the binding details in an easy to read and systematic way. One point to always consider is that price is negotiable; quality and service aren't. Most companies will be able to save you on some features that you may not need or offer unadvertised discounts. If your first inquiry is to get a price, you may be disappointed if the company is not too responsive. You will not receive an honest quote if the company realizes that you're "shopping" their quote around to other companies.
MBE is an experienced professional DJ service and utilize only professional DJ audio equipment. MBE will not service any event without a qualified contract, signed by both parties, that clearly states MBE’s responsibilities to every client and event.

Professional Audio
&
Equipment

The first impression most clients and their guests have of the DJ and DJ company is when they arrive on site. The next impression is that of the DJ equipment. Residential home stereo equipment is never acceptable and will not stand up to the rigors and demands of a regular party. DJ and DJ companies invest significant resources and utilize professional audio equipment to make sure the sound that's played at their events is accurately reproduced. From speakers, amplifiers, mixers, lights, cd/dvd/mp3 players to an assortment of microphones, software, cables; all are part of the equipment necessary to produce quality music and video. In order to protect many of these sensitive equipment, the equipment is usually transported in professional flight cases, that are able to withstand the demanding realities of travel and the constant rigors of loading and unloading. Many companies list the brand names and respective models of the equipment they utilize somewhere on their websites. MBE doesn't list its equipment for the simple reason that manufacturers are constantly improving their products and MBE is constantly looking for ways to improve the quality of our sound by reviewing new products that are available on the market and that will enable MBE to achieve this. We also don't think it's necessary to burden our clients with a lot of technical jargon, where the difference between brands/models is basically price and minor technical data. Unfortunately, problems do occur as with any electrical equipment, but it's how the company responds to those failures and setbacks that sets them apart. Most companies will have back-up equipment in place and ready to go with minimal interference to any event.
MBE utilize only professional quality audio/video equipment specifically designed for the DJ industry and that are able to reproduce audio accurately and brilliantly for uninterrupted hours on end.

Professional
DJ
Insurance
&
Liability

Reputable DJ companies protect themselves and their clients with industry standard professional liability insurance. Most venues/caterers often require vendors performing on their premises to have some type of liability coverage. Inquire early in the search process what is required for the event site and communicate this immediately with the DJ/DJ company. This will give your "favorite" DJ time to obtain such coverage, if he didn't previously have any coverage. Most companies that are members of professional organizations should have no problem obtaining and providing the required documentation. If your DJ is unable to obtain the required insurance, the venues and caterers often offer the services of their own "in-house" DJ in crunch time. If no other DJ/DJ company is available, this may be not be a terrible alternative as a last minute replacement.
MBE maintains full professional liability insurance at all times and will provide a copy of its rider in the client's contract documents for their records. Any other required information is available upon request.

Service

"Don't worry about anything, we've done this a thousand times!" How many times have you heard that before and how many times does that type of answer make you anxious? Your event is unique and you should expect the DJ/DJ company to respect your plans and personal input into your party. Initial phone conversations are a good starting point, but you must always insist on meeting him/her at their official (legal) place of business or in a public place of your choice to review the details of the event. This is also a good opportunity to get a first impression and get to know the person(s) assigned to your event. It is never a  good idea to see this person for the first time as he's setting up for your event. Not all DJ/DJ companies will issue you a contract (very rear), but you should always request something in writing to review and fall back on. Please read the contract carefully, If one is issued, and don't feel pressured to sign it on a moments notice. You should be allowed the time to review and ask questions if you don't understand particular details. Although the DJ/DJ company may have done a thousand parties before, it's reasonable to expect that this may be your first party and your questions are warranted. If you are not comfortable with the way something was written, ask for it to be rewritten or removed.

MBE provides all the on-line forms necessary for its clients to personalize their event. After a review of your details with the staff, MBE always insists on an initial consultation meeting to discuss all the details pertaining to how the client want the event to unfold. A professional contract is always issued for all MBE events.
